Yiming Tang (b. Chengdu, China) is a painter currently living and working in the New York area.
His work examines the tension between emotional imbalance and individual alienation, exploring the state of being within the psychological structure of contemporary society. Tang regards solitude as a constant condition embedded in the self, with repression and instability as its manifestations. Through intense colors, distorted gestures, and dislocated spatial structures, he constructs a sense of controlled chaos—where rationality maintains formal order while suppressed emotions seek an outlet. This “controlled imbalance” reflects the psychological strain of modern life and serves as an ongoing reflection on mental health and emotional expression.
As an Asian artist living abroad, Tang’s practice is deeply shaped by his cross-cultural experience. He translates this condition into a visual language guided by a directorial mindset: each painting unfolds like a psychological drama, where figures, light, and space are choreographed to build a narrative suspended between dream and reality.
Visually, Tang creates contemporary pictorial symbols that embody the force of emotional dissonance. These motifs are not decorative—they function as materializations of psychic energy, revealing the restlessness and confusion of the individual amid information overload and social conditioning. Through the intervention of pop-cultural imagery, Tang turns painting into a site of experiment on the modern psyche—a stage where reason and emotion, order and collapse, perpetually confront each other.
In his work, solitude is no longer a static emotion but a lucid state of existence. Through the tension of color, gesture, and composition, Tang depicts the psychological landscape of an individual negotiating between the social and the self. Painting, for him, becomes a form of psychological archaeology—an excavation of the subconscious and a reimagining of the contemporary spiritual wasteland.
Tang received his BFA in Painting and Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in 2025.
